In December, I was in a car accident on I-81.
If you’re in real estate, you know how much time we spend on the road. At some point it almost feels inevitable. First and foremost, I’m incredibly grateful. No injuries. No long-term harm. Just shaken nerves and a totaled vehicle.
But what unfolded after the accident is what really stayed with me.
I’ve had the same insurance company since I was born. Life insurance. Homeowners insurance. Every vehicle policy. For 37 years, everything ran smoothly. And like most relationships with companies, everything is fine… until it isn’t.
When I needed them, truly needed them, I expected clarity, guidance, and partnership.
Instead, I got ten weeks of chasing updates, tracking down answers, and repeating my story to what felt like dozens of different people. There were questions about where my vehicle even was. Back-and-forth on value. Debates over condition. Out-of-pocket rental expenses that stretched far longer than they should have.
We all knew from the beginning the car was likely totaled. That wasn’t the surprise.
The surprise was how hard it was to get there.
Everything Is Easy Until It Isn’t
This experience made something very clear to me.
The real test of a company or a professional isn’t how they show up when things are smooth. It’s how they show up when things get hard.
Buying a home in the Shenandoah Valley is exciting. Selling a home can feel hopeful and forward-moving. But there are also moments in real estate that feel overwhelming.
Inspections bring surprises. Appraisals come in lower than expected. Financing hiccups happen. Family circumstances shift. Contracts get tense.
And in those moments, you don’t just want a name on paperwork.
You want someone steady.
You want someone who knows what they’re doing.
You want someone who answers the phone and takes ownership of the problem instead of passing you off to the next department.
What Ten Weeks Taught Me
For ten weeks, I was the one coordinating everything. Following up. Double-checking. Pushing for clarity. Advocating for myself.
It was exhausting.
And it made me think about what my clients experience when they’re buying or selling a home in Shenandoah County, Rockingham County, Page County, or Augusta County.
They are stepping into one of the largest financial decisions of their lives. They deserve someone who isn’t just present for the celebration, but who is equally present when the unexpected happens.
This is also why I have intentionally chosen not to structure my business around layers of hand-offs. No transaction coordinator passing messages back and forth. No disappearing after contract ratification.
When you work with me, you get me.
Could that evolve one day? Possibly. But only if it enhances the client experience, not distances it.
Because I now understand, at a very personal level, what it feels like when the partnership isn’t there.
The Real Estate Parallel
In the Shenandoah Valley real estate market, things are not always straightforward. Markets shift. Insurance conversations get louder. Appraisals change. Assessments surprise people. Roof policies evolve.
There is always something.
And while I cannot control every moving part, I can control how I show up inside of it.
I can be the one making the calls.
I can be the one clarifying the contract language.
I can be the one navigating the tough conversations.
I can be the one who doesn’t disappear when it gets uncomfortable.
Because when you’re buying or selling a home, you shouldn’t feel like you’re chasing answers.
You should feel supported.
Partnership Isn’t Proven in the Easy Moments
The accident was frustrating. It was inconvenient. It was eye-opening.
But it also reinforced something I already believed deeply.
True partnership shows itself in hard moments.
It’s easy to look polished on social media. It’s easy to celebrate closing day photos. It’s easy when everything goes according to plan.
The real measure is what happens when it doesn’t.
And that’s the standard I hold myself to in my real estate business.
Whether you’re relocating to the Shenandoah Valley, buying your first home, selling acreage in Shenandoah County, or navigating a complex transaction in Rockingham or Augusta County, you deserve someone who stays steady when things get complicated.
Not just someone who shows up when it’s easy.
